GMR has seen significant growth in their business over the last ten years. It focuses on large-scale infrastructure projects ranging from airports to highways and recently railways. Although a billionaire, Mr Rao is also one of India’s biggest philanthropists having donated around £74 million in 2013.
Cyrus Poonawalla is head of the Serum Institute of India, one of the largest producers of paediatric vaccines in the world. According to Forbes, Mr Poonawalla has recently seen his personal wealth increase by $1bn to just over $4bn. His work with vaccines has won personal accolades from the likes of Bill Gates and Prince Charles.
Hot on the heels of Asia’s richest man Li Ka-Shing is Lui Che Woo, the entrepreneur who has seen his wealth almost double recently to an astonishing $23bn.
Dr Lui, 84, is chairman of K Wah group which has interests in property, hotels and Casinos through Macau-based Galaxy Entertainment group. A citizen of Hong Kong, he was honoured with the MBE in 1982 by Her Majesty The Queen and appointed Justice of the Peace (JP) in 1986 for his exemplary contributions to the community.
Paul Sagoo, the Founder of The Asian Awards said: “We all hear of the amazing stories of wealth creation in India and China but seldom get to understand the stories behind the people who create them. It’s great to see The Asian Awards honouring such amazing people.”
Mr. Sagoo noted that the three billionaires have not only created wealth for their communities but are also focussed on philanthropy and giving back.
“As we know philanthropy in Asia lags far behind that of the west, which makes honouring such individuals even more important,” Mr Sagoo said. “The Asian Awards has always honoured the very wealthiest of Asians not by design but because these people have stood out for reasons other than just being wealthy.”
The Asian Awards will be held on 4th April 2014 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, Park Lane, NW105NR, from 18:30.
Several stars, business leaders and politicians will attend ceremony to be hosted by Lord Sebastian Coe.
The Asian Awards celebrates the outstanding achievements of individuals born in or with direct family origin from all of Asia across all disciplines of life. The annual event has become one of the largest gatherings of ultra high net-worth people to be staged in the UK.
