Imagine being a young child and having your genitals cut off with scissors, a razor or a knife without anaesthetic, for no reason other than to control you and rob you of your ability to feel pleasure.
Approximately 20,000 young women from the UK and France are considered to be ‘at risk’ for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a painful and unnecessary act of violence that robs them of their ability to feel any sexual pleasure as well as causes serious complications to their health.
Discussions of child brides are often couched in gentle language and talk of culture and tradition. The reality is much harsher than that. The fact is that 70,000 child brides die every year due to complications of pregnancy or childbirth. Because their bodies are not fully matured, girls younger than 15 are five times more likely to die during childbirth than women in their twenties.
