Libyan, Egyptian and Syrian nationals must apply for UK transit visa

All Libyan, Egyptian and Syrian nationals who wish to transit at a UK airport will be required to apply for a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) from 3rd April 2012.

This is an additional visa requirement which permits certain nationals to travel via the UK on their way to another country. Those travelling to the UK on a DATV are not able to pass through UK Immigration Control or collect any luggage on a journey through the UK.

Refugee Council has strongly criticized the government’s decision to change visa rules for Syrian, Libyan and Egyptian citizens travelling to the UK. "We are very concerned that the government's change in visa rules will effectively close the borders to people who are fleeing the horrific violence and human rights abuses in Syria and the Arab Spring countries,” Donna Covey, Chief Executive of the Refugee Council said. “Many of these people who have faced persecution will have been forced to leave at very short notice, and it will be impossible for them to apply for any kind of visa in order to reach a place of safety.”
