Lech Walesa postpones visit to London Metropolitan varsity

Walesa was to receive honorary Doctorate of Philosophy

8th December 2009: President Lech Walesa has postponed his visit to the London Metropolitan University due to ill health. Walesa was to receive honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in recognition of his outstanding contribution to international relations in Europe and the wider world.

The President is believed to be suffering from back injury, sustained during the recent Berlin Wall celebrations in Germany.

London Metropolitan University will now be inviting President Walesa next year to collect his honorary doctorate, but has planned to go ahead with its graduation ceremony for 500 graduates.

A VIP lunch is also being hosted for some key representatives of the Polish community.

Commenting on the award, varsity Vice-Chancellor Alfred Morris had earlier stated: “Lech Walesa started a process of change and growth for Poland, which continues to this day. British society and British Universities are richer for the contributions made by Poles, and we seek increasingly to develop dialogue and academic exchange between our two countries.”
