Ashton: Racism against EU values

EU foreign affairs Chief Catherine Ashton has asked all countries to urgently ratify and implement the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

Ms. Ashton said that the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination served as “an occasion to underline the European Union's unwavering commitment to fighting all forms of racism and xenophobia.”

Racial discrimination, she said, “is contrary to the values on which the EU is based, and we work hard both at home and around the world to stamp it out.”

The EU’s commitment to fight racism takes many forms – legislation, awareness-raising campaigns and support to projects run by civil society, Ms. Ashton said.
