An asylum seeker has claimed that Yarl’s Wood immigration removal centre in Bedfordshire advises pregnant women to have abortions.
Elsie (not her real name) has been living in the UK for 13 years. She fled Nigeria where the Ham&High reports that she was imprisoned, tortured and raped because she was caught kissing her girlfriend.
She now fears going back home where she claims she will be killed.
Home Office rejected her application for asylum last year and for four months, Elsie was detained in Yarl’s Wood.
She recently told a Labour Party meeting in Muswell Hill that her detention left her with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Elsie claimed upon arrival at the centre for the first time, each woman’s urine is tested and those found to be pregnant are advised to have an abortion, the Ham&High reported.
Elsie is supported by charity Women for Refugee Women (WRW), in appealing her rejected asylum application.
The Ham&High quoted a spokesman for G4S, which runs the centre’s healthcare services, to have said: “These claims are both false and offensive.
“On average 200 women per month arrive at Yarl’s Wood, and in the last month we issued just ten pregnancy tests, all of which were following requests from detainees.
“We work in partnership with Bedford NHS Hospital midwifery unit should any detainee require care during the course of a pregnancy at the centre, in accordance with NHS guidelines.”
