The Turkish border with Greece is the main gateway to the European Union for illegal immigrants, most of whom come from Asia and Africa. The influx of immigrants has fuelled racist rhetoric and violence in debt-ridden Grrece.

Some 400 migrants were illegally crossing the land border from Turkey into Greece every day before the Greek clampdown on illegal immigrants.

The Turkish border influx has dropped considerably by 84% over the past month., said the Greek police, with 1,121 illegal immigrants arrested at the border crossings over the past month, compared to 6,991 a year earlier.
