Female Genital Mutilation is “an abhorrent crime”, says Browne

Crime Prevention Minister Jeremy Browne has described Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) as “an abhorrent crime” and said that “those found to practice it should feel the full force of the law.

The minister outlined government action against the “horrific practice” at a recent meeting held jointly with the NSPCC at the Home Office.

Mr. Browne said: “The government is working with UK and international agencies and taking action to help prevent women and girls becoming victims.”

The Home Office has announced a new £50,000 fund to support frontline agencies tackling FGM.

Mr. Browne is also among ministers who have signed a pocket-sized statement against FGM to set out the law, support families and protect those most at risk.
