First Asian Mayor of Gloucester defects from Labour to UKIP

Harjit Gill, the former Mayor of Gloucester has abandoned the Labour for UKIP.

Mr Gill, 59, is a Sikh who came to the UK from in India in the seventies. He was a Labour Councillor for eight years.

Politics will separate Mr Gill from his wife Jasminder who remains a Labour Gloucestershire County councillor.

“I was in the Labour party for 20 years. But more and more I think my views are in line with what UKIP want. I think Britain should be out of the European Union. We are in the back seat there,” ITV News quoted Mr Gill to have said.

He said they’ve spoken with UKIP head Nigel Farage many times and they agree on a lot. “I'm not worried – UKIP is changing a lot. If there are people with views that are racially prejudiced, I will challenge them,” Mr Gill said.
