23rd August 2010: The Labour Market Outlook report suggests cap on immigration should be introduced in a phased manner, if it is to be brought in. The report suggests British workers are too poorly educated to rival immigrants for jobs

Author Gerwyn Davies says the proposed migration cap is due next year, even though many employers are still struggling hard to fill up skilled vacancies. This is despite high unemployment rate.

The shortfall of skilled candidates, as a result of the cap, could further damage British companies, Davies further warned.

He says British workers cannot be trained overnight to fill skilled jobs currently occupied by migrant workers. If a cap is to be introduced, it has to be gradually phased in to avoid harming UK competitiveness.
