The government is urging Black and minority ethnic (BME) workers to check they are not being underpaid following changes to the National Minimum Wage on 1st October 2013.
Employers paying the wrong amount will have to pay back arrears to workers, face a financial penalty and could also be publically named under the Government’s National Minimum Wage naming scheme.
Black and minority ethnic workers are at risk of not being paid correctly, with almost 8% being paid NMW or less according to a 2012 report, a much higher proportion than other population groups.
Employment Relations Minister Jo Swinson said: “The NMW rates changed on 1st October, and workers should check that they’re being paid the correct minimum wage by their employers. If workers are unsure what they are entitled to, or need advice about what to do if you think you are being underpaid, they should call the Pay and Work Rights Helpline on 0800 917 2368 or visit www.gov.uk for more information.”
The National Minimum Wage rates changed on 1st October 2013. The adult rate increased by 12p to £6.31 an hour; the rate for 18-20 year olds increased by 5p to £5.03 an hour; the rate for 16-17 year olds increased by 4p to £3.72 an hour; the apprentice rate increased by 3p to £2.68 an hour; and the accommodation offset increased to £4.91.
