MRN welcomes West Midlands’s conference on EU migration

Don Flynn, Migrants Rights Network (MRN) director has welcomed the initiative of the West Midlands Strategic Migration Partnership which, together with partners in the region, is organising a conference on EU migration.

The conference – EU Accession Migration – the West Midlands Experience – will take place at  Birmingham University on the 25th March 2013.

"The WMSMP is showing real leadership on this question. The event will provide a great opportunity to look at the facts about the impact of migration over the course of the last decade in this important region of the UK," MRN said.

MRN thinks that it is vital that local and regional authorities start to provide a proper account of what migration has meant in their areas. We now have the advantage of very high quality statistics about the settlement of migrants in localities across the country in the form of the 2011 national census data, MRN said.

The importance of the conference is that the West Midlands will be leading the way in showing how good use can be made of this data to better understand what is happening with migration and help develop the policies which will ensure that it will continue to be a positive experience for the region.

The conference is open to all authorities and organisations in the West Midlands concerned with migration issues.

People from other UK regions who would like to know more about how they can examine the evidence from the national census as it applied to their localities are also welcome to attend.
