The organisers, LOCOG, have hired 193 chaplains, representing nine faiths.

They will assist some 17,000 athletes and officials attending the Games. In addition, there will be 200,000 staff, and volunteers, along with 20,000 media personnel.

The International Olympic Committee requests facilities for five faiths – Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus and Buddhists. London 2012 organisers have added Sikh, Zoroastrian, Jain and Baha’i to the list.

Already, Mayor Boris Johnson has also called upon the Indian communities to get involved in volunteering during the 2012 Games.

“It is with this in mind that I am calling on all Indian communities to get involved in volunteering during the 2012 Games as well as becoming mentors to work with young people, especially in uniformed groups such as the Scouts and Cadets”.

The Mayor minced no words in appreciating the Indians in London by saying: The dynamism and contribution of the Indian community to London’s economic, social and cultural life and their commitment to this city never fails to impress me.
