Number of Romanian and Bulgarian workers in UK falls – ONS

Since border controls on Romanians and Romanians were fully lifted in January, the number of Romanians and Bulgarians working in the UK has fallen by 4,000, new figures show.

Latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that there were 140,000 Romanians and Bulgarians working in the UK between January and March 2014.

These official figures are a disappointment to those who claimed a huge wave of Romanians and Bulgarians would flood the country once they gained the same rights to work in the UK as other EU citizens.

A former Ukip MEP even claimed 1.5 million would come looking for work in the UK while Migration Watch said the country could expect 50,000 arrivals a year from Romania and Bulgaria.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said the data "gives the lie to UKIP's scaremongering on immigration".

"The very modest number of Romanians and Bulgarians coming to work in Britain this year is in stark contrast to the inflammatory rhetoric of earlier this year," Mr Alexander said.

Where is the flood of Romanian and Bulgarian workers? Instead of coming here for work they are now leaving?
