Almost a half of the illegal items seized by the Southwark Council’s trading standards last year were illegal skin lightening creams. This shows that there is a big market for skin lightening creams. In the following video London Live discusses the wider issue about the use of skin lighteners with user Irene Major and TV presenter AJ Odudu. Ms Major defends using skin lighteners saying she just feels good about it and loves the look of it. She adds that “it’s a choice and we are free to do so.” Her view is however, not shared by Ms Odudu who points out that the issue with skin lightening products is that they have something to do with the society’s vision of beauty. “You clearly feel more beautiful the lighter you are, and I think there is a deeper issue there,” she says.
