60 US, Canada nationals sought asylum in UK

All applications turned down

Asylum, home office, persecution, Americans in UK

27th January 2010: The UK is apparently becoming the preferred destination for the asylum seekers from the US and Canada; even though their pleas did not find favour with the government.

Figures released by the Home Office suggest as many as 60 Americans and Canadians have applied for asylum in the UK in the past few years. Asylum has been sought on the grounds that they were persecuted in their own countries.

According to the figures made available to the Guardian, 45 Americans and 15 Canadians tried to obtain asylum in Britain between 2004 and 2008.

The government said the applications were turned down. The Home Office simply said all asylum seekers must prove they face persecution at home and that authorities there cannot address it properly.
